I
always felt akin to light and shadows, empty old interiors and quiet
corners. This kinship spurred the filming of light and its shadows
in the MA space (in Exeter campus). Around the time when I started
the current project, Exeter campus was almost deserted due to redevelopment.
I took the opportunity to make short video clips in the MA space,
which had white walls and was flooded with natural light. I felt there
should be a figure occupying the space and doing something in the
videos. The idea of cleaning occurred to me. It had been very much
part of my life. The activity of cleaning involved a lot of repetitive
motion, and this repetitiveness transcended its activity. Repetition
brought familiarity and familiarity created security. Security was
needed for a refuge. These were qualities connected to my idea of
consolation. At the same time I was aware that some repetitive activities,
such as the writing of lines, brought in the punitive associations.
The summary of all these formed the initial concept of my project
on repetition.
